Pujols Joins Elite 500 HR Club

The Los Angeles Angels’ Albert Pujols is one of baseball’s all-time greatest hitters. He’s had a couple slow years since joining the Angels after spending 11 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, but he proved that he is still one of baseball’s best Tuesday when the Angels took on the Washington Nationals. The Angels won the game by a score of 7-2.
Of course their win was not the story of the night. The night was all about Pujols. He became the first player in Major League Baseball history to hit home runs numbers 499 and 500 in the same game and also became a member of an elite club joined only by the best hitters ever to play the game. Members of the 500 home run club include names like Mickey MantleBabe RuthHank AaronJimmie FoxxReggie Jackson and now Albert Pujols.

Remembering What I Knew of Angels' Pitcher Nick Adenhart ....5 years Later ...

Honestly, I knew little of Nick Adenhart. I knew he was young, new on the big league scene and as far as I was concerned really good at his job. I never met him or his friends or anyone else on the Angels ... wait I met  Lackey once but that is story about how one guy could be so damn ugly. You think he's bad with a hat - try without one at a bar Ewww! But back to the story at hand, a story that matters and may just teach you something whoever you happen to be....

Nick Adenhart was a pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2009. He had pitched in the big leagues before but in 2009 he won the third spot in the  Angels rotation. After his first and very impressive start to the season he lost his life in an accident and it’s something I will always remember because basically in a way, I was there. The five year anniversary of his death and the death of two of his friends was on Wednesday. It happened on April 9, 2009. It does not seem like five years have passed but time just flies the older you get. I didn’t know Nick but the tragedy that occurred affected everyone around it.
My Story:
I was in Anaheim for the final game Angels pitcher, Nick Adenhart ever pitched. It was the third game in a series against the Oakland Athletics and for six innings he owned the A’s. The A’s ended up winning 6-4 so it was easier for me to appreciate those six shutout innings than . I remember thinking, “That kid is good. Better keep an eye on him” – or something of that nature. That night I was in Fullerton where the crash occurred. A friend of of mine owns a popular restaurant and bar there called The Slidebar Rock ‘n Roll Cafe. My friend Jeremy, my mom and I were hanging out there late night having a few drinks and tasting the all new items on the menu. We heard a loud noise and consequently soon after sirens. I remember we talked about it for a minute and moved on. I mean it probably didn’t affected us in anyway. Turned out that it did. My mom and I watched him that night pitch against our A’s. My friend Jeremy is an Angels fan. We were affected but not in the way so many others were.

Will the Angels be able to compete in the AL West with Hamilton Gone and a poorly aging Pujols?

The answer to the question is that they probably won’t. There appeared to be a chance for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to compete in the American League Western Division in 2014, according to some experts but that chance was downgraded this morning. Now it is goodbye to the  possibility of a comeback year for the Angels’ outfielder Josh Hamilton who, up until Tuesday night, was looking like he might have one. The 32-year old was batting .500 after the first week of the season going 12-24 with two home runs and six RBI.

Here is the reason as to why it’s never really a good idea to slide into first base. It’s a no slide zone, seriously. Hamilton slid into first base in the seventh inning on Tuesday injuring his left thumb. He was able to play to continue to play defense but by the ninth inning Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia said that Hamilton could “barely grip a bat.” He was immediately taken to the hospital for x-rays that came up negative.
Scheduled for an MRI Wednesday morning things still didn’t appear to be that bad for Hamilton and the Angels. Unfortunately the MRI results revealed that Hamilton suffered a complete ulnar collateral ligament tear along with a torn capsule which, as it goes for hand injuries, is probably worse than a break.

Tiger's Finally Find Shortstop in Angels' Romine

It was reported early Friday that the Detroit Tigers have finally found the shortstop they want to replace Jose Igelsias is out indefinitely with fractured shins. The Tigers had been looking around the league to acquire a shortstop and were linked to free agent Stephen Drew and both the Arizona Diamondbacks’ infielders Chris Owings and Didi Gregorious. Earlier in the week it was reported that the Diamonbacks were keeping Owings and shopping Gregorious but according to reports Friday, the shortstop position in Arizona may still be up for grabs. Owings is starting the opener and Gregorious the following day. Stephen Drew was called a bad fit for the Tigers by ESPN’s Buster Olney. They would most likely only have the veteran for one year and the Tigers would also have to forfeit a top draft pick to the Boston Red Sox if they were to decide to sign Drew.

There is good news out of the Tigers’ camp Friday according to John Morosi at Fox Sports. The Tigers traded left-handed pitcher Jose Alverez to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for shortstop Andrew Romine. Romine is the son of former Boston Red Sox outfielder, Kevin Romine and the brother of New York Yankees catcher, Austin Romine.
