Pujols Joins Elite 500 HR Club

The Los Angeles Angels’ Albert Pujols is one of baseball’s all-time greatest hitters. He’s had a couple slow years since joining the Angels after spending 11 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, but he proved that he is still one of baseball’s best Tuesday when the Angels took on the Washington Nationals. The Angels won the game by a score of 7-2.
Of course their win was not the story of the night. The night was all about Pujols. He became the first player in Major League Baseball history to hit home runs numbers 499 and 500 in the same game and also became a member of an elite club joined only by the best hitters ever to play the game. Members of the 500 home run club include names like Mickey MantleBabe RuthHank AaronJimmie FoxxReggie Jackson and now Albert Pujols.

Will the Angels be able to compete in the AL West with Hamilton Gone and a poorly aging Pujols?

The answer to the question is that they probably won’t. There appeared to be a chance for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to compete in the American League Western Division in 2014, according to some experts but that chance was downgraded this morning. Now it is goodbye to the  possibility of a comeback year for the Angels’ outfielder Josh Hamilton who, up until Tuesday night, was looking like he might have one. The 32-year old was batting .500 after the first week of the season going 12-24 with two home runs and six RBI.

Here is the reason as to why it’s never really a good idea to slide into first base. It’s a no slide zone, seriously. Hamilton slid into first base in the seventh inning on Tuesday injuring his left thumb. He was able to play to continue to play defense but by the ninth inning Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia said that Hamilton could “barely grip a bat.” He was immediately taken to the hospital for x-rays that came up negative.
Scheduled for an MRI Wednesday morning things still didn’t appear to be that bad for Hamilton and the Angels. Unfortunately the MRI results revealed that Hamilton suffered a complete ulnar collateral ligament tear along with a torn capsule which, as it goes for hand injuries, is probably worse than a break.

Best First Baseman in Baseball: The Best of MLB Debate Series

Major-League-Baseball-LogoBaseball season is back and the season is rounding into form. Former MVP and Cy Young Award winners are producing, other players are going down with a series of injuries, and fans around the globe are hoping it is their year. With that in mind, three Sports Unbiased writers got together and decided to debate the best players at each position throughout Major League Baseball. The format is simple, each writer makes a choice and then the writer that went first gets an opportunity for rebuttal. For the sake of these debates there is no “Best of the American League” or “Best of the National League.” Every player on every team is fair game. Up first in the series are the first basemen. Is it Joey Votto or Albert Pujols? Did either of them make the cut? Let’s get to it and see who Brian Reese, Jen Rainwater and Adam Solowiei chose as their best first baseman in Major League Baseball.
